Overview

Instructors can create assignments for their students within Canvas. The Assignments tool is a versatile tool that can be adapted to fit several different functions. For example, the Assignments tool can be used to create an assignment to which your students upload their research papers, and the tool can also be used to make placeholder assignments for assignments submitted on paper in order to create columns in the Canvas grade book for the on-paper assignments. These are only two of the many uses of the Assignments tool.

Each assignment automatically generates a column in the grade book so the instructor can keep track of their students' grades in one location.

Discussions and quizzes can also be assignments, but they are created and managed using the Discussions tool and the Quizzes tool.

Note: You can also see how it looks for a student to submit an assignment by using student view. To access student view, select Settings at the bottom of the list on the left-hand side, in the course you wish to use student view in. There will now be a list of buttons on the right-hand side. Select Student View from the top of the list. You may now select the assignment for which you would like to see how an assignment is submitted and submit an assignment. You can not use student view for submitting google doc assignments. When you are done using student view select Leave Student View at the bottom of your screen.
