Your profile picture is an important part of your Canvas profile. However, you may experience trouble when you try to upload a profile picture. The cause of the problem may be one of several options, and this tutorial will outline them and their solutions.
Note: ePortfolio is a separate storage account.
Option 1: Exceeded File Storage
By system default, you have been allocated 200 MB for personal file storage. Uploading content such as profile pictures into Canvas uses this storage. If you upload more than 200 MB into your personal files, Canvas will not allow you to upload a profile picture. You will know that your file storage is the problem if you see the message pictured below when you select Save after uploading a picture in the Select Profile Picture window. The following steps will show you how to check your personal file storage and make more space available in your personal files.
Select the Account button in the pane on the left and then select Files.
These are your personal files. In the bottom left corner, you will see the percentage of the available storage you have used. You most likely will see that you have used 100%.
Because you are over your maximum, you will need to delete unwanted files or download the files, save them to a location external from Canvas, and then delete the files in Canvas. To download files/folders, select the empty space between the title of the folder and the creation date to select the item and then select the Download button at the top of the page.
To delete files or folders, select the empty space between the title and creation date to select the item and then select the trash can icon at the top of the page. To select multiple items at once, hold down the Ctrl key (selects individual items) or the Shift key (selects all files between two selected files) on your keyboard when you select the space between the title and creation date.
As you remove items, your amount of available storage will increase. Once you have less than 100%, try to upload your profile picture again.
Option 2: Locked Profile
Before a user can edit his/her profile, the user must confirm his/her default email address in Canvas. However, sometimes a user's username gets set as the default email address instead of an email address, and in order to change it, the user has to confirm the default email address. But if the default email address isn't an email address, the user can't receive the confirmation link. This is what we call having a locked profile. But don't worry! We can fix it! Contact Online Teaching and Learning at firstname.lastname@example.org or 435-865-8555 for help. Be prepared to provide us with your name, T number, email address, and course numbers.

Option 3: File Format
Canvas only accepts .jpe, .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, and .png file types for profile pictures. You will know that your image is the wrong file type if you can't find your image in the location where you saved it when you try to upload the image. Option 4: Resolution
Unless your profile picture is HUGE or especially teeny, Canvas will be able to use it as your profile picture. However, if your profile picture is very large, it will take up precious space in your personal files. On the other hand, if your picture is too small, Canvas will have to enlarge the image to the right size and thus pixelate your image. Option 5: File Name
Images with file names that consist only of alphanumeric characters guarantee better results compared to images with asterisks, dashes, extra periods, etc. If your image is not uploading and the file name has non-alphanumeric characters, try renaming your image with only alphanumeric characters and trying again.
Option 6: Browser
If your profile picture still isn't uploading correctly and you've ruled out all of the other options, try logging out, closing your browser, opening the browser back up, and logging in again. This often fixes uploading problems.
