Jing takes screenshot images or video recordings of your screen. Jing is useful for giving students instructions, showing a support team member what your screen looks like when you have a problem, and saving screenshots for your records. This tutorial will teach you how to install and use Jing.
Note:
f you are on an SUU computer you may not be able to download Jing without the appropriate permission.
Installation Steps
Step 1
Go to http://www.techsmith.com/jing.html. Select Free Download in the top right corner.
Step 2
You can choose either to Start Windows Download or Start Mac Download. You can also review the system requirements on this page.
Step 3
Follow the steps within Jing's installation program.
Step 4
Select the box says I accept the fine print then select Install.
Step 5
Select Finish.
Jing Options
Find the yellow circle peeking from the edge of your monitor onto your screen. It could be on any of the four edges.
Hover your cursor over the sun, and three options will appear.
Select the gears to view the Jing options. You can send feedback, add hotkeys, hide the Jing sun and get help with the Jing options. Select the checkmark to close the options circle.
How to Take a Screenshot Image
Hover your cursor over the sun on the edge of your screen again to view the three options. Select the plus sign to take a screenshot.
Your cursor will turn into yellow crosshairs. Select and drag to define which part of your screen you want to save as a picture. Release your cursor to complete the selection.
A rectangle with four options will appear when you release your mouse.
To save the selection as an image, select the floppy disk icon.
You will now be able to add annotations on top of the image using the options on the left side. You can draw an arrow, add a text box, draw a box, or highlight. Select the colored square to change the color of the annotation. Select the floppy disk icon at the bottom of the window to save the image.
A new window will appear informing you that the capture has been saved. Select Open the file to view the finished image or select Close to exit the window.
How to Capture a Video Recording
Hover your cursor over the sun on the edge of your screen again to view the three options. Select the plus sign to take a screenshot.
Your cursor will turn into yellow crosshairs. Select and drag to define which part of your screen you want to save as a recording. Release your cursor to complete the selection.
Select the filmstrip icon. Record your video and audio.
Select the stop icon to finish the recording.
Select the floppy disk icon to save the recording.
A new window will appear informing you that the capture has been saved. Select Open the file to view the finished recording or select Close to exit the window.
Accessing Jing History
To view past screenshots in one location, hover your cursor over the sun on the edge of your screen and select the middle icon. A new window will appear. Use the options at the top of the window to narrow the displayed screenshots. Select an image to view, share, or delete the image.
Sharing Jing Images and Videos
Hover your cursor over the sun on the edge of the screen and select the History circle.
Select the image or video you want to share and then select the arrow icon.
Note
You can share images or videos as soon as you take them by selecting the arrow icon.
The following window will appear informing you that the link to your image or video is now ready to paste. You can paste it into an email, a word document, web browser address bar, etc.
