Overview

This tutorial will show you how to capture videos and presentations and then upload them into Canvas using the Record a Presentation tool (also know as the Kaltura CaptureSpace Desktop Recorder).

This feature is only accessible through the My Media tool. You can embed the finished video into assignments, discussions, etc., but you will not be able to record from these locations.

Open the Desktop Recorder

Step 1

Open Canvas and select the My Media tool in the pane on the left.

Select Add New in the top right corner and then select Record a Presentation.

Select Download for Windows or Download for Mac depending on your operating system.

Step 4

Install the downloaded program.

Step 5

Repeat steps 2 and 3 to reopen the Presentation Recorder.

Step 6

Select Open Link in the window that appears.

A window will open in the corner of your screen. Select how you want to record. The following list describes each option:

1) Presentation & Lectures: record your PowerPoint and input from your webcam. You must save your PowerPoint in .ppt format and NOT .pptx format in order for the presentation to work.

1) Screen: record your computer screen only

2) Screen & Webcam: record your computer screen AND the input from your webcam. If you select this option, you will not be able to remove the webcam recording after you have recorded the video.

3) Webcam: record input from your webcam only

4) Voice: record input from your microphone only. No video recording will be created.

The following steps will demonstrate the Presentations & Lectures feature and Screen feature.

Record Presentations & Lectures

Step 1

Select PRESENTATIONS & LECTURES.

You will see the recording window with the recording options in the pane on the left.

1) Use the top dropdown menu to select your webcam and select the desired quality. Select More to view more quality options.

2) Skip down to the PRESENTATION section and select the circle next to On. Select Browse to open your PowerPoint. Your file will appear in the middle of the screen. Remember: your PowerPoint has to be in .ppt format to work.

3) Use the dropdown menu next to SOUND to choose your microphone. Select Off if you do not want to include audio.

4) Select Record in the bottom right corner to start recording.

Once you select RECORD, the recording will count down from 5 and then start automatically.

You will see the PowerPoint and a small window with your webcam input.

Hover your cursor over the bottom left corner of the PowerPoint to view your options, including

1) go forward

2) go back

3) draw on the slide

4) view all slides at once

5) zoom in

6) more options

To end the recording, select Done in the window with the webcam input. Continue to the Edit the Recording section of this tutorial for further instructions.

Screen Recording

The following steps will show you how to record your screen only.

Step 1

Select Screen.

If you have dual monitors, select which screen you wish to capture. Next, select whether you want to capture the whole screen or just a selected area. Select RECORD or SELECT AREA in the bottom right corner depending on the option you chose.

Once you select RECORD, the recording will count down from 5 and then start automatically.

If you are only recording part of your screen, select and drag a box around the area you want to record. When you release the mouse, the recording will count down from 5 and then start automatically.

Step 4

Once the countdown window closes, record the video or presentation. To draw on, pause, finish, or cancel the recording, select the Kaltura icon at the bottom of the page to make the options appear.

Step 5

To draw on the recording, select Draw and then select the shape or marker you want to use. Drag the circle to change the width and select the colored square to change the color. Select the broom button to erase a drawing and select the arrows to redo/undo drawings. Select the Done button to exit Drawing mode.

Select Done to finish the recording.

Edit the Recording

Please note that not all types of recording include all of the following editing options.

The editing window will open after you select Done. Select the Play button in the top left corner to preview the recording. Drag the blue bar to fast forward through the video.

To Trim the video, select Trim in the pane on the left and then drag the blue circles to cut off the edges you don't want. Select Apply in the bottom right corner to save your changes.

To chop out parts of the video in the middle, select Chop in the pane on the left and then drag the blue circles to select the part you don't want. The blackened area on the strip is the area that will be removed. Select Apply in the bottom right corner to save your changes. Repeat this step for additional parts you want to remove.

To add title slides to your recording, select Titles in the pane on the left and then use the blue arrows to scroll through the templates. Once you have found the right template, type your text into the placeholders. Select Apply in the bottom right corner to save your changes.

To add credits, select Credits in the pane on the left. Scroll through the templates to find the style you want and then replace the placeholder text with your own text. Select Apply in the bottom right corner to save your changes.

When you have finished editing your video, select Done in the bottom right corner.

Upload the Recording

Step 1

Once you select Done, the editing window will close and the Upload Options window will open. The Edit original recording option will take you back to the editing window. Select Create new recording to save your work.

Step 2

In the new window, type in a title, description, and tags (optional). Then select Upload.

Once the video has finished uploading, select Close in the bottom right corner to close the window.
